Calvin Arter is the Director of the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) within the Clean Air Program at EPIC. His career focuses on using rigorous science to understand the health impacts of air pollution and translate evidence into policies and strategies that improve lives. Previously, he held climate, energy, and science-policy leadership roles at the U.S. Department of State, where he led international clean energy initiatives and an air quality program connecting U.S. experts with embassies around the world. He also served as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the Department of State. Calvin has authored numerous peer-reviewed studies on air pollution, transportation emissions, environmental justice, and public health. He received a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.S. and B.S. in Physics from Wake Forest University
