EPIC Fellowships offer the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the research process through positions with EPIC faculty mentors or to gather “real-world” insights through external summer internships.

While research will be the focus of the fellowship, students may also gain experience with grant and proposal writing, communications, and program coordination on an as-needed basis within the Institute. Fellows are invited to participate in seminars and weekly workshops and to attend EPIC-sponsored conferences and events for which they may be asked to draft summary reports.

About the Fellowship:

The Abrams Environmental Law Clinic (https://www.law.uchicago.edu/clinics/environmental) challenges those who pollute illegally, advocates for changes to regulations and laws, holds environmental agencies accountable, and develops innovative approaches for improving the environment. While the Clinic’s projects evolve based on current client needs and faculty research interests, a summer fellow might work on promoting forward-thinking and inclusive energy policy (including community solar) at the state and federal level, assessing how public utilities have and should adapt to climate change, helping to develop voluntary carbon markets and carbon market products, assessing innovative approaches to addressing PFAS contamination, and/or helping environmental justice communities address air and soil contamination.

Outputs:

  • The work would entail research and writing and could involve interviews and meetings with stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • General research and writing experience required;
  • experience with environmental and energy law and policy or meaningful amounts of substantive coursework in the fields required;
  • projects can be tailored to the quantitative skills of the selected fellow.
