Position Details
Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP in partnership with the National Park Service are seeking two interns who will be working on a variety of natural resources projects to protect native plant communities, wildlife habitat, and prevent invasions from exotic invasive plants.
Position Responsibilities will include:
Restoration of Alpine Tundra
- Loading and transportation of plant materials and supplies to project site
- Planting greenhouse and nursery stock into project sites
- Setting up irrigation systems
- Recording data on project progress
- Speaking with park visitors on project purpose and other park issues
- Developing mitigations to prevent further damage to sites
Restoration of utility line disturbances around Park Headquarters
- Treating invasive plants using manual methods and herbicide treatments
- Monitoring seed and mulch sites
- Weighing and preparing seed mixes
- Seeding and planting sites using material grown in greenhouse
- General care of plants in greenhouse and nursery
- Installing various erosion control materials
- Mapping restored areas with GPS
Removal of exotic plants in high priority and high visitor use areas:
- UTV operation and safety training
- Using backpack sprayers and manual tools to treat exotic plants
- Plant identification
- Monitoring and mapping of exotic plants along trails and montane meadows
- Using GPS equipment to navigate to sites and map treatments
- Handling and safely mixing herbicides
- Using various techniques to survey for new and current populations of exotic plants
- Data collection and reporting on surveys and treatments
- Identifying needs and making recommendations of future surveys and treatments
- Using GIS databases, and word processors and spreadsheets to compile data and information
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be 18 by the first day of the position
- Must be licensed to drive in the United States for at least 3 years with a good driving record
- Must be a US Citizen or legal permanent resident
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preference for individuals with an education in biological sciences or natural resources or related field
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Good communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Flexible/Adaptable as projects and project timeframes change frequently and rapidly
- Leadership skills and professionalism as these positions may work with volunteers, other park staff, and may interact with park visitors
- Strong work ethic
- No certifications are required as training will be provided for the work being conducted.
