Each year, Forbes magazine highlights a group of talented young upstarts judged to be among the most promising individuals working across a variety of key sectors, including the energy sector. In this year’s ’30 Under 30′ list for energy, Forbes has chosen Lane Nelson, a University of Chicago Booth School of Business graduate (’17).

Lane and his business partner, Charles Murray (also Booth ’17), started the company Switched Source. Switched Source’s Tie Controller, a patented power-electronics device, provides utilities with an unparalleled level of power-flow control in two directions, helping to enable broad-scale renewable energy integration. the company is working with three utilities for deployments starting in spring 2018.

Switched Source placed second in the University of Chicago New Venture Challenge, the number one university accelerator in the country, and was among the winners of the University of Chicago’s Innovation Fund. The company also received a U.S. Department of Energy ARPA-E innovation grant, along with several other award prizes for competitions across the country. The Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is a strategic partner for the company.
