The Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) is proud to announce that UChicago alumnus and Sphera Solutions Founding CEO and President Paul Marushka (AB’90, MBA’93) has joined the EPIC Advisory Group. The Advisory Group, which provides high-level strategic advice to EPIC leadership across all core areas of focus, consists of leading practitioners from diverse fields within the energy and climate sector.

Marushka founded and continues to lead Sphera, the leading provider of integrated sustainability and operational risk management software, data and consulting services. At Sphera, and throughout his career, Marushka has grown businesses by bringing innovative solutions to market, leveraging software, analytics and technology services.

“I’m honored to join the EPIC Advisory Group and support the important work the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago is leading,” said Marushka. “EPIC brings world-class research and rigorous analysis to some of the most complex challenges of our time. I look forward to contributing insights from several industries and helping strengthen the connection between academic discovery and practical solutions that enable organizations to operate more sustainably, safely and responsibly.”

Marushka’s past career journey spans leadership roles at various software and data companies such as Marsh ClearSight, Fair Isaac Corp., and CCC Information Services. Throughout this time, he developed and launched a variety of software and analytics products recognized for their impact on the industry. He has also authored numerous articles in publications, including the United Nations Global Yearbook, on the use of analytics and technology in decision-making.

I look forward to working with him to help EPIC further its impact through real-world insights into the solutions organizations need to be more sustainable,” said Jeff Currie (PhD ’96), the chair of the Advisory Group and the chief strategy officer of Energy Pathways at Carlyle.

Along with being recognized for his development of software and analytics products, Marushka has also been recognized as an environmental leader for breaking new ground in creating solutions, programs, platforms and products to help companies achieve greater success in environmental management. Marushka is also the author of the recently published book Sustainable Success: How Businesses Win as a Force for Good, which explores how organizations can align sustainability, risk management, and long-term value creation. Additionally, he is a board member of the Hyde Park Institute at the University of Chicago, which sponsors research and programs that advance the study and teaching of moral philosophical thinking with a focus on integrating intellectual, professional and moral development.

Marushka has a J.D. from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and an A.B. in Political Science from the College at the University of Chicago. His is also the parent a third-year student studying Political Science at the College at the University of Chicago.
